Tap2Trans Browser

Tap2Trans Browser is an application for Windows Phone that integrates a web browser with Bing Translate. When reading a page and you encounter a word or phrase that you don’t understand, highlight the text that you want translated and press the “search” button. The translation of the selected text will then appear.

When learning a language, practicing with authentic materials written in the target language is a great way to quickly learn new vocabulary and common sentence structures. However, one of the main difficulties with using authentic texts is that whenever a word or phrase that hasn’t been learned yet is encountered, one must waste time looking up the definition of the word or phrase. Having to frequently look up definitions while attempting to read something interrupts the flow of reading and makes reading much more tedious.

I encountered this problem while reading news websites written in Portuguese. I wanted to use real sources for practice reading, but having to switch browser tabs to Bing Translate to look up a word and then switch back really slowed down the pace at which I could read. This problem was compounded when I tried reading on my Dell Venue Pro.

To improve the speed of looking up unknown words and I phrases, I developed Tap2Trans Browser to make it easy to translate selected text on a webpage. Tap2Trans Browser made it much easier to read the news websites that previously took a lot longer to read.

It can be downloaded at http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=997f876d-2e21-4a57-be57-273764bc8c06.
I’d be happy to hear what you think or any ways to improve the application.
